Three students from St. Louis Community College and two local legislators today received special recognition at the Missouri Community College Association’s annual convention in Branson, Mo.

The MCCA 2011 Student Leadership Awards were presented to Donna Brandy of STLCC-Florissant Valley, Steven Julmus of the Meramec campus and Debbie Zamora of the Wildwood campus. The award is presented to one outstanding community college student from each of Missouri’s 20 community college campuses. Recipients have demonstrated excellence in leadership activities.

Mo. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Glendale) and Mo. Rep. Jill Schupp (D-Creve Coeur) each received the Missouri Community College Association’s Distinguished Legislator Award at a ceremony in Branson today. The awards were presented in recognition of their support for St. Louis Community College and community colleges throughout the state.

“Sen. Eric Schmitt is an excellent choice for the Missouri Community College Association’s legislative award,” said STLCC Chancellor Myrtle E.B. Dorsey said. “As chair of the Senate Jobs, Economic Development and Local Government Committee, he has worked tirelessly to develop and support economic development opportunities and job training options that benefit Missourians. We appreciate his work to create a better equipped and more prepared work force.”

Dorsey also commended Schupp, saying, “Rep. Schupp is a passionate proponent of community college programs and services. She is particularly enthusiastic about our life sciences and allied health initiatives, as well as our efforts to prepare workers to compete and succeed in these growing employment sectors.”

More than 600 community college faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees from around the state attended the session at which these awards were presented. Attendees also included recipients of MCCA’s Distinguished Legislator Award, Mo. Reps. Ryan Silvey and Lincoln Hough, as well as Mo. Sen. Mike Parson.

The Missouri Community College Association is a statewide organization through which Missouri’s community colleges work together to advance common agendas. MCCA provides advocacy, education, information and networking opportunities in service of the state’s 5,700 community college faculty, staff, administrators and trustees.
