JEFFERSON CITY   •   Republican John “Jay” Ashcroft received nearly $200,000 in contributions just a day after he won the Republican nomination for the 24th District Missouri State Senate seat. And he’ll face a Democrat, Jill Schupp, who has raised even more.

Ashcroft, the son of former governor and U.S. Sen. John D. Ashcroft, R-Mo., won the GOP primary earlier this month and will face Schupp, currently a Democratic state representative from Creve Coeur, in the November general election to fill state Sen. John Lamping’s seat.

A lawyer from an unincorporated area of St. Louis County, Ashcroft defeated physician Robb Hicks and attorney Jack Spooner in the Aug. 5 primary. Schupp did not have a primary opponent.

The 24th district has see-sawed between Republican and Democratic representation, but a chart prepared for the redistricting commission put the Democratic majority in the district at 54 percent.

Ashcroft’s $190,000 in contributions over $5,000 came from four entities:

– $150,000 from the Missouri Senate Campaign Committee, the political action committee that assists Republican Senate candidates.

– $25,000 from Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles.

– $7,500 from Sen. Mike Kehoe, R-Jefferson City.

– $7,500 from Kehoe’s wife, Claudia.

This number sits atop the $245,882 plus $6,550 in late contributions — received between the date of the last campaign report and the Aug. 5 primary election —that Ashcroft already raised for his campaign.

Schupp has raised $668,270 this election, plus $21,501 in late contributions.

In June, the Missouri Senate Campaign Committee also dumped $165,000 into the campaign fund of Rep. Paul Wieland, R-Imperial. Wieland will face Rep. Jeff Roorda, D-Barnhardt, in November in a fight for the vacant 22nd District Senate seat. The seat formerly was held by Ryan McKenna, who resigned in December 2013. (Alex Stuckey)
